A fun way to learn a new language

Vocabulary drills… a necessity when it comes to language learning, but surely not everyone’s favorite. Let’s admit, there is nothing as boring as learning wordlist after wordlist. Moreover, it’s not the most effective way to memorize new words: your brain loses itself easily in the vast amount of (still meaningless) words. Too many trees in an immense forest…

That’s when vocabulary games come in!

Studies have shown that information is more efficiently processed when you’re having fun. You learn more easily when you are in a relaxed state of mind: your brain does not oppose or interfere and thus is more open to accept what you are doing. Young children learn everything by playing, even that language they need so hard to communicate with the outer world.

Vocabulary puzzles, the ideal way to deal with a boring task?

Learning a new language takes consistent effort over a long period of time. And learning vocabulary is an important part of that process. There are no shortcuts. You have to go through it. So, what could be the benefit of crosswords when you still have to learn all these new words? They keep you motivated, because you actually enjoy the time spent learning these new words. You’ll find out that you are more eager to learn on a regular basis and you will be able to pick up new words with ease.

Another benefit of a vocabulary game is that it engages your brain on a deeper level. You’re not only learning new words, your mind is more open to absorb things while you’re having fun. This makes your brain form more neural connections. And that, in turn, results in a better understanding of what you are learning.

And last, but not least, it is a fine way to spend otherwise wasted time productively. You can quickly fill in a few words when sitting at the hairdresser’s or waiting for the potatoes to cook. If you use all these tiny lost moments every day – and I can assure you there are lots of them – you’ll be amazed at the progress you make.
